It's been a long "vacation" but we'll get back to business now. I've just updated my main website Dynamic Marketing Consulting. Lots of interesting new resources there for you. Also mentioned that this blog will now concentrate on "Nuggets" of information for you. The plan is to highlight an item of interest for you. The main website is so large, and can be overwhelming to sort through the resources. There are still the departments of Incentive suggestions, Office resources to save you money, and Money Matters for utilizing your hard earned funds.

The years roll by quickly! 2007 was no exception. How was 2007 for your business?

January is the time for analysis. What worked well for your business? What performed poorly? What trends are changing, and how can your business change to accommodate new trends? You probably have many of your 2008 plans in place, but January brainstorming is great for tweaking.

Staff and customers appreciate being involved. One thing I found useful was to have coffee individually with each member of my staff. Ask each what he/she thinks the business is doing well, and what areas they see that could be improved. I like to ask how they feel we could better use their personal strengths. Really pick their brains. You’ll be impressed. Be sure to include the question "How am I doing?" and graciously accept whatever they say. We give employees evaluations regularly. We receive them from our bosses too. It’s important that we realistically know how we are personally perceived. Seriously consider all of their suggestions. If you choose to use some of their suggestions, be sure they get credit, and praise them to their peers. Rewards are appreciated.

For public input, you can have a suggestion box if that is suitable to your business. When concluding a sale, you can ask "How are we doing?" Remember to add the "We appreciate your business" comment. Appreciation has great value - to both staff and clients.

We want to remember to learn from what didn’t work well, not to beat ourselves up, but to help us formulate a better plan. In that respect then, even mistakes can be valuable learning tools. I call some of my mistakes "Things I’ve learned that I didn’t want to need to know" ....in trying to keep my sense of humor.

For 2008, I intend to streamline - to stop doing what isn’t working, and to creatively expand on what IS working!

A Christmas Story - The Tablecloth
The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, were about to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn. They arrived in early October excited about their opportunities. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc., and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.

On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 15 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high. The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home.

On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea-market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.

By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years earlier, in Austria. The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria. When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and she never saw her husband or her home again. The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home.That was the least he could do.. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job.

What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return.

One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving. The man asked the pastor where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war. He wondered how there could be two tablecloths so much alike. He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison.. He never saw his wife or his home again all the 35 years in between.

The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.

Putting it all together, "this" is definitely the season (Thanksgiving) to remind ourselves WHY we do what we do, and what is really important.....what puts quality in our life...and being thankful. We are thankful for our families, abundant blessings, AND the privilege of having our own businesses and being legally entitled to make our own decisions.

So....Marketing101 this month is to remind ourselves to live fulling in the moment, treasuring each and every one of them. Ever wonder WHY we celebrate Labor Day? Well, FYI -

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."

"Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City."

Labor Day indicates a different phase.....kids go back to school.....leaves begin to change colors and fall from the trees....we stop wearing white.....people stay inside more.

Because of these reasons, business changes too. Our advertising has been geared to last minute travel before school, sales because school is starting, jackets because the weather is starting to change.

One of the biggest changes now is that people will be at the computers more often. Many will be looking for bargains.....which is where online merchants benefit. Thinking ahead for the holidays. Nobody wants to "talk" about it, but in September people ARE shopping for Christmas.
Our Business101 project for September is to give people what they need online. Give them what they NEED - quality products at great prices. Or help them earn more for their holiday shopping.

In my travels, and in managing malls, it was very evident there was a MAJOR CHANGE with Labor Day.....the malls were swamped - then they were quiet. It is up to US, the merchants, to flow with the seasons, always giving the customers whatever it is THEY need and want.
So, our pace may slow a bit, but our marketing will only "change" with the season!

This is a very good season to give your staff a Thank You for all their hard work during the busy months. After all, YOU can’t do everything, and your business growth depends on your staff.

This is also a good season to say Thank You to your customers/clients. A "Thank You for your business" on their way out the door is always appreciated. A Thank You note is greatly appreciated. A simple way to stimulate business is to ask "How are we doing for you?".....and listen. It will be well worth your efforts to make people feel appreciated!
